(ii) Autism does not apply if a child’s educational performance is adversely affected primarily because the child has an emotional disability, as described in paragraph (c)(4) of this section.
(iii)A child who manifests the characteristics of autism after age three could be identified as having autism if the criteria in paragraph (c)(1)(i) of this section are satisfied.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex, neuro-developmental disorder that impacts a person's ability to form social connections and relationships, use verbal and nonverbal communication, and self-regulate. This life-long disorder usually appears during early childhood with varying severity of symptoms across a range or spectrum. When referring to a person with autism one can use either person first language ( a child with ASD) or identity first language (autistic child). Among education and medical professionals person-first language is most commonly used but many autistic people advocate for the use of identify-first language. Autism Spectrum Disorder vs. Autism: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a medical diagnostic term added to the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) in 2013 which encompasses disorders (Asperger's Syndrome, PDD-NOS, Autistic Disorder, etc.) that were previously stand alone diagnoses. The term autism is also still widely used and is preferred by some autistic self-advocates. Expand this document to view North Carolina specific statistics. |
